Abhishek Shukla, S Sreesanth’s friend arrested for allegedly removing the cricketer’s money and articles from his hotel room, was on Thursday granted bail by a trial court.

The judge rejected the Delhi Police plea to send him to judicial custody.

Chief metropolitan magistrate Lokesh Kumar Sharma rejected the prosecution’s plea to remand him to judicial custody as the court was of the view that police had failed to convince that Shukla was part of the fixing scandal.

Another court granted interim bail to suspended cricketer and fixing case accused Ankeet Chavan for a week to get married on June 2.Shukla got bail on a personal bond of Rs 25,000 and surety of like amount.

Shukla was told to give up his passport, not to leave Mumbai and join the probe. The court asked the police to explain how Shukla was taken to Mumbai on Wednesday without its permission.

The police argued Shukla used to pay Sreesanth’s bills. He accompanied the cricketer to stations where he played matches and Rs 5.5 lakh removed from Sreesanth’s room had been recovered from Shukla.

The court said: “Paying bills on another person’s behalf or accompanying him to stations is not a criminal act in the statute. No criminal liability can be fastened to him.”

Granting interim bail to Chavan with a condition that he’ll surrender on June 6, additional sessions judge Vinay Kumar Khanna said: “By denying the accused (the opportunity) to solemnise his marriage, which was already fixed not only he but also the would-be bride and other relatives would also suffer because of no fault of theirs.”
